What’s the difference between a beginner and advanced sewing machine?
By admin | March 3, 2010
I know how to sew pretty well, but the machine is totally finished, and I need to get a new one. Is there something I could learn on an advanced/intermediate sewing machine that I couldn’t on a “beginner”?

Buying Your First Sewing Machine
By Arin Rollins at http://www.easysewingtips.com
The first item you need to start sewing is a sewing machine! Here are a few tips on finding the perfect starter machine for you:
Begin simple - You do not need all the bells and whistles on your first machine. You won’t want to have to sit down and read a 500 page manual just to learn how to thread the machine before you can even sew a stitch! I personally love the Brother brand of machines. They make a great starter model - the LS 2125i, for example. I have had better luck with Brother than with the comparable Singer model. The Singer model seemed to jam a lot and produced uneven stitches. Maybe I just had a lemon but when I bought another Brother machine I was very happy with the quality for the price (only $89!!)
Where should I get my first sewing machine? My suggestion is to go to Wal-Mart or Target. You can find a great machine under $99. You are welcome to go to a fabric store but you will probably pay much more. Wal-Mart usually has a great craft section that also carries simple sewing supplies.
What functions should it have? Find one that has some basic stitches and button hole capabilities. Basic stitches include straight stitch, zig zag stitch, hem stitch. etc. All machines have tension control and stitch length dials which you can find out more about in your sewing machine’s instruction manual. Remember, the simpler the machine, the simpler the instruction manual, and the faster you will be off and sewing!! Some machines will have a lot of stitches which look fun but can be overwhelming to a beginner. These machines are great for more advanced seamstresses, but I would stick to a simple machine to begin with. All the projects on my blog are made with my $89 machine from Wal-Mart!
Read the instruction booklet - If you took my advice and bought a basic machine, leafing through the instruction booklet should take 15 minutes. It will give you instructions on how to thread the needle, wind the bobbin, and perform all other functions of the machine. For instance, if you want to try a zig zag stitch, go to the page that says “zig zag stitch” and it will tell you the recommended thread tension and stitch length settings for best results.
So go get a great starter machine and get sewing! For more articles about all things sewing, visit me at http://www.easysewingtips.com. I guarantee you will be inspired and find some sewing projects you can make at home!

Buying a sewing machine can be a daunting experience, as well as an exciting one, a little like buying a new car, remember you might be committing to spending a few hundred dollars and a sewing machine is something you are going to use a lot, you need to make sure that the one you spend your money on is really the right one for you.
So how do you make the decision on the sewing machine that is right for you? Well the first thing to do is decide what you need the sewing machine for, is it just some light repair work or something more complicated? Are you going to use it on just one type of material or many different fabrics? Is the brand you have at the moment the one you wish to purchase this time?
Are there certain functions on the sewing machine that you must have, list the features the machine needs in three categories, these should be features I must have on my sewing machine, features I would like to have and other features that would just be a bonus and might make you try something new with your sewing machine because they are there. When you do make a buying decision ensure that all the functions from your first list are available, as these are the ones you need and use, also ensure that most of your I would like to see features are also available as these are also the ones you would use most and do not get sold on features that are not on the first two lists as you will probably not use them.
Is there something about your current sewing machine you love, does it have that one killer function or is it easy to use for one reason that you would like to see in your new sewing machine. The oboist is also something you should be asking yourself about, is there something I hate about my old machine that I want to avoid with my new one?
Once you have thought through these questions and have answered them as fully as you can, you can start to look at and test the sewing machines in your stockists, please make sure that it is you who tests the sewing machines you are interested in, do not let the sales person demonstrate it for you, they will not be coming home with you when you make the purchase and it is you that needs to feel comfortable and confident in your new sewing machine, if you regularly use one type of material then take a piece with you to test the sewing machine on, the same is true if you use one function more than the others, please test it in the store before you consider making that purchase.
The final thing I would like to talk about is price, as I said earlier you might be paying hundreds of dollars for the sewing machine of your dreams, when you have found the make and model you are interested in make a note of the details, model numbers are great to use to search for on the internet and compare prices on line with those on the high street, you know you like the machine now you just have to find it at the best possible price

What kind of sewing machine should I buy? What is the best for the cheapest price?
By admin | February 19, 2010
I don’t need the most elaborate sewing machine, as I just want to use it for hems mostly, but I don’t want one that is going to fall apart the first time I use it either. What brands are good quality but still on the cheaper side?

It is a good habit to real product reviews before you buy any product online. Online buying has certain limitations of not being able to view the product you wish to purchase physically.
This is where real customer reviews come into picture. If you have to buy a new sewing machine then reading real customer reviews is one of the best ways to educate yourself about the kind of features and price tags you are looking for.
Sewing machines reviews can be very helpful in many ways that can save your time and money. Here is a small list of things you can learn for reading real reviews.
1) Customer rating for various makes of sewing machines.
2) Features of machines and their ease of use.
3) Does the machine actually have all the features as advertised?
4) Customer support from the manufacturer regarding various queries?
5) After sales service from the manufacturer.
6) Promptness in shipping schedule from the manufacturer?
7) Care in handling of the sewing machine during transport.
9) How was the performance of the machine even after using for several years
10) Which sewing machine brand is the most reliable one and which one should be always avoided? (very important)
11) Many more such queries answered
As you can see from the above list that this information is extremely vital for your satisfaction as a potential customer because you deserve to be educated in a special manner.
Once you have this information handy with you, it becomes almost easier to go for the best and the most reliable sewing machine brand easily. Truly speaking it’s a great idea to use the machine yourself before you buy it, but as mentioned previously it is not always possible to use a demonstration piece physically. That is why reading real sewing machines reviews is one of the best ways grab your hands on the finest sewing machine of your choice.

Selection and variety are good, but having so many options can also make it confusing to make a decision. So it is for choosing the right sewing machine. There are several sewing machine manufacturers, and each one has several lines of sewing machines with several models in each line. This article first reviews the history of America’s premier sewing machine manufacturer: Singer Sewing Co. It then discusses several lines, models, and features of Singer sewing machines for sale.
Singer has been manufacturing home sewing machinesfor almost 160 years. Singer was founded in 1851 by Isaac Merritt Singer. Singer’s revolutionary innovations made it the leading manufacturer of sewing machines in the United States with two short years. Singer has never stopped innovating since that time. No other company has contributed nearly as much to the evolution and improvement of the sewing machine as Singer Sewing Co. Two of Singer’s most recent innovations are the SwiftSmart ThreadingTM System and Drop & SewTM Bobbin System, which make tedious threading and bobbin tasks a breeze so you can spend more time getting creative with your sewing.
Singer sewing machines are well-built and made to last. And every singer sewing machine for sale is backed by a 25-year limited warranty. Singer has also focused on making its sewing machines easy to operate, even for beginners. Many features on singer sewing machines are accessible with the touch of a single button, and Singer has made menial, time-consuming tasks like threading the machine and loading the bobbin both fast and fool-proof.
Singer has a wide selection of sewing machines: from starter sewing machines for beginners to highly sophisticated embroidery sewing machines for avid sewers. Let’s break them down into a few categories, and then we’ll look at some of the models within each category. The main categories of sewing machines are:
1) Embroidery sewing machines– these machines can “talk” to your computer to turn a complex design you create using embroidery software into a home-made work of art in a matter of minutes
2) Electronic sewing machines –– these machines have time-saving “electronic” features, such as single-button selections, automatic needle threaders, automatic buttonholing, drop feed, etc.
3) Basic sewing machines – these machines are still electric-powered, of course, but they don’t have as many electronic buttons and automated features
Singer’s product lines generally coincide with the categories of sewing machines above. The Futura line is Singer’s line of embroidery sewing machines. The following lines are electronic sewing machines: Curvy, Confidence, Touch & Sew, Advance, Ingenuity, Precision, as well as a handful of other machines. And these lines are basic Singer sewing machines: Inspiration, Esteem, and Simple.
Within each product line, there are usually several sewing machine models. For example, the Confidence line has the following electronic sewing machines: 7463 Confidence, 7465 Confidence, 7467 Confidence, 7469 Confidence, and 7470 Confidence. Within a particular product line (such as the Confidence product line), the higher the number, the better the sewing machine in terms of features, capabilities, stitch options, etc. Note that this rule does not necessarily apply when comparing one line of sewing machines to another line.
To illustrate, let’s compare the 7467 Confidence to the 7469 Confidence. Among other differences, the 7469 has 98 stitch patterns, 7 one-step buttonholes, and 12 frequent-use buttons whereas the 7467 has only 70 stitch patterns, 3 one-step buttonholes, and 6 frequent-use buttons.
Some people assume that a higher model number correlates to a higher difficulty of use. Generally, that is not true. And in many cases, the opposite is true. Higher model numbers (within a product line) have more features and options, but oftentimes those upgraded features actually make operating the sewing machine faster and easier, not more complex.

I am starting a little boutique store, and coming more from the angle of furniture repair. I have little sewing experience, and now I really want to learn the basics. I want a decent machine that will let me get creative. maybe with various materials…. What are the various options on a sewing machine, and what makes them valuable? I have seen $5 thrift store versions up to $400 models with digital readouts. Any buying tips?

When you think about sewing machines what do you think of in terms of the capabilities? Do you think in terms of its varied functions? Or how it can make things easier for you?
Well, when I think about sewing machines I think of some of the things I am going to be able to accomplish with it. I may choose to think about the different items that I am going to be able to fix when I have a sewing machine around or it could be the many different items I am going to be able to make with the use of a sewing machine.
How many of us really thought about how the sewing machine came about? Not likely. More than likely there was not many of us that really think about where the sewing machine came from. They are just probable aware that they seen their mother or grandmother using one all the time either fixing items that had a small tore or making some complete outfits for their children. Now days the sewing machine is not used as much for making complete outfits for you children or for yourself.
They are used more for convince such as fixing little tears that you may have noticed on your cloths or for making different quilts and blankets. When you think about making an entire outfit for your children you start to think that there is no way that they are going to wear anything that you have made for them. With some of the children anymore that is going to be true.
Even if you are not thinking of making an outfit for your children you may think of making different items for around the house. You are able to make simple things like curtains or blankets. If you are feeling a little brave you could even do little more complicated things like some quilts for your home. Yet there are quilt designs out there that are going to give you some ease with the pattern having everything ready for you to sew together.
No matter what your skill on a sewing machine is you will be able to a little sewing hear and there. As you are practicing with the little stitches you are doing on cloths you will soon be able to accomplish more difficult tasks to try.
Now, get on to get one sewing machine today!
