How to sew a curved line with a sewing machine?
By admin | January 19, 2012
I have been sewing straight lines for years- to make pillow cases, tote bags, etc.
Well, now I am trying to make my very first rag doll. Obviously, that requires sewing curved lines. My lines curves go all over the place- nothing smooth about them.
I am about to give up and try to sew the doll by hand.
But, before I do that can anybody tell me if there is some secret to learning how to sew a curved line?
Thanks! =)

At the craft store or a good fabric store you can get a curved plastic outline that you can trace any kind of curve, making a light mark on the material with a pencil or colored pencil. Follow the lines you have made with your machine and after you have your design and sewn the fabric, you can remove the lines when you rinse the article in your washing machine or with a damp cloth.

It may help if you draw the stitching line on the fabric.
Use a 1/4″ presser foot, a zipper foot or, if the machine has a needle position feature, move to the far right to help make a narrow seam and still keep as much fabric as possible on the feed-dogs.
When changing the needle position, make sure it does not hit the presser foot.
Sew slowly. Some curves require that you stop, needle down, lift the presser foot and lightly turn the fabric.
When satisfied with the stitching, clip the curves to help shape the fabric.
Practice on scraps to help perfect your technique.
