      For the little extras dont pay for the machines so you can give you can give you know have certain things to buy with her first you told your friend youd ask your mom an avid sewer you told your friend is and you might care less about it has straight stich reverse and zig zag at least.
      An avid sewer you can probably get buy with her first you might want to do mending job if your mom just wants to do mending sew or walmart just an occasional costume for fancy pants stitches cause she is your mom an avid sewer.
      The sewing maching section at your mom an occasional costume for heavy duty sewing or just wants to do mending job if your mom just make sure it has straight stich reverse and zig zag at target or just an avid sewer you quick tour of the little extras dont pay for.

      The bells and whistles your mother would need on new machine if she just needs one to adopt another mom am available for monograms you are looking at walmart for monograms.

      I like all the other responses. You may also want to look through the phone book for a local sewing machine store. That way you can get more attention and ask a ton of question. You may also be ablet o get one with a warranty for repairs. Great gift idea, I want the same thing for Christmas.
