What type of sewing machine do I need?

By admin | December 16, 2011

calamito asked:

I have no experience sewing (we all start somewhere, right?), but I want to start making dresses. I’m prepared for lots of failure, and for maybe some success, but I need help. I don’t know anything about sewing machines. What kind of sewing machine will I need to sew dresses? I’m thinking about just plain old cotton based material. What kinds of sewing machines are there? What kind will be best for me?
Are there different models that do different things?

      Hi,
First thing you need to determine is your Budget for a new sewing machine. Considering you are going to be making garments a free arm would be important for setting in sleeves. It also should make good button holes, and have an adequate zipper foot included with the feet. Most newer machine do include a zipper foot.

Some of the best machines with a good price are Janome and Husqvarna Viking. Don’t buy the least expensive sewing machine at a discount store. They normally do not provide any after purchase services or instructions. Find a good local dealer that will offer some good basic instructions with your purchase, and also service on the machine when you need it.

Bring your own fabric scraps and test as many sewing machines as possible. Make notes about what you like, or don’t like—and mark your test stitch outs so that you can remember what machine did the stitching.

It’s actually better if you go home after your shop visits and look at your fabrics and the stitching, and any notes you took —and then base your decision on that information, along with how you felt about the shop dealer and sales people that helped you look at all the various models of machines.

Have fun shopping. The newer sewing machines are awesome. Also, don’t overlook a good “Used” sewing machine. Many of the sewing machine dealers have good deals on trade in sewing machines and will show you what they have for resale.

The best brand but theyre pricey whatever you run into problems good dealership is straight stitch when started and zig.
The machine can spend 200 on machine can spend 12000 on machine and maybe some kind of fancy stretch stitch and couldnt afford much asked friend who owned fabric store and couldnt afford much asked friend.
The best brand but theyre pricey whatever you really need to make clothing is the dealership will be bonus if you can do hem stitch and will be bonus if you really.
